Report of the Accounts Commission: Improving the School Estate

SCHOOL ESTATE STRATEGY WORKING GROUP Report of the Accounts Commission: Improving the School Estate The SSTA would comment on the Report as follows. Too little attention is given in the Accounts Commission Report to the concerns raised by those working in new and refurbished schools, the vast majority of which were built or adapted under some PPP/PFI initiative. The study accepts that these schools could generally "be better designed". The obvious question is "why did this happen?" The report does…

General comments

In addition to the comments made on the consultation proforma, the SSTA would wish to add the following. It is disappointing to note the loaded nature of certain questions. Questions 1, 2, 8, 9 and 10 involve the adoption of certain assumptions in order to provide an answer. Question 4 and 7 are so loaded that they cannot be answered. The inclusion of such questions has raised doubts as to the validity of the entire consultation exercise. The SSTA notes…

Consultation Questionnaire

Q1. Do you welcome the intention to update all qualifications at Access, Higher and Advanced Higher in line with Curriculum for Excellence? Please comment on any implications to be considered. The Question is clearly loaded and requires an assumption to be made as regards "updating". The requirement for articulation is obvious and accepted. The retention of Higher as a "Gold Standard" is welcomed. Progression and coherence between courses are essential. There are substantial resource implications for any new National Qualification…

Bulletin 410/08 - 14 October 2008

1. ASSISTANCE AND ADVICE FOR MEMBERS Members are asked to note that there is much useful advice in the SSTA diary. Members' attention is drawn to the section relating to "Advice to Members" and in particular to the fact that the School Representative is not generally the first person to be approached if a member has a problem or seeks advice. 2. CONSULTATION ON THE NEXT GENERATION OF NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS IN SCOTLAND Members are urged to take part in this…

SSTA CALL FOR A DELAY IN CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE - 7 October 2008

The Council of the Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association at a meeting on Saturday 4 October 2008 gave unanimous support to a motion calling for a delay in the implementation of the Curriculum for Excellence. The full text of the motion reads: "The SSTA welcomes the general principles of Curriculum for Excellence and the commitment to a secondary curriculum delivered by subject specialists. However, given the timescale for the publication of the revised "outcome and experiences", the lack of any timetabling…

Industrial Action by other Employee Groups

In view of the industrial action by public sector unions on 20 August the following advice is offered to members. 1. HTs are likely to be viewed as "keyholders" and thus can be expected to open the school and close it at the end of the day. 2. On days of industrial action by other employee groups the employer has the right to be clear that no teacher is taking secondary action. Any member who is prevented from attending work…
