Introduction

Dear Member

Welcome to the revised Health and Safety Handbook, which has been comprehensively updated this year. This was undertaken by members of the Health and Safety Panel, with the help and advice of Iain Glennie, Assistant General Secretary.

It is available online on the website (www.ssta.org.uk) in the secure section (i.e. you will need to log on). The website version is regularly updated, while the hardcopy remains as the regulations were when it was written in early 2013.

This Handbook was the basis for H&S training held for all attending representatives at Stirling in 2022. The Association strives to provide regular training for reps.

This is intended as an advisory document which you may consult at any time. It covers the main areas of Health and Safety, but does not incorporate every possible scenario. We hope that you will find this a useful Handbook.

You should also refer to the specific regulations of your local authority, or consult their H&S officers. Your District H&S rep may also be of assistance to you. Their name should be available from your District Secretary - check the list in your SSTA diary or on the website. If in doubt, you should consult any of the Professional Officers at HQ by email, or by ‘phone (0131-313-7300) if the matter is urgent.

Should you wish to make any suggestions for additions or revisions, please contact Iain Glennie. If you find any errors, please inform the Association at: info@ssta.org.uk so that the Handbook can be amended and updated.
