Water should be POTABLE i.e. safe to drink after boiling.

There are regulations governing permitted levels of bacteria and metal ions in water supplied for drinking. Water should be tested regularly, and the results should be available to both the school and District Health and Safety Committee. Water supplied directly from the mains or via chillers is safe. Water from header tanks may have problems.

If in doubt, ask for water to be tested. Sampling must be done by accredited samplers. Extended flushing before testing will not be permitted. Metals are tested on the first draw from a tap and the microbiological sample taken next. Water tanks, shower heads, swimming pools etc. should be cleaned and tested regularly including for legionella bacteria. Results for this should also be available.

Drinking water

An adequate supply drinking water should be available to all employees. Drinking water does not have to be marked unless there is a significant risk of people drinking non-drinking water.
